AquaEL PearlMax Bio is a multi-layered biological filter medium made of sintered glass. During biological filtration it supports not only nitrification but also denitrification and mineralisation.

Cavities inside the medium create differences in the concentration of ammonium and nitrite ions and bind these ions to its surface. PearlMax Bio contains trace elements (calcium, magnesium, potassium) that are released gradually and, according to the manufacturer, support the metabolism of aquarium life. The medium does not change the pH, KH or GH of the water.

PearlMax Bio suits different types of filters, also in a small aquarium. To clean it, rinse the medium in water taken from the aquarium. It is durable; the manufacturer recommends replacing about 50% of it every 4–6 months.
