Advice and care

How to choose a water conditioner

Choose by the job: removing chlorine, clearing the water or adding minerals back.

  • Tap water

A conditioner binds chlorine and heavy metals at every water change.

    Tropica Water Conditioner
  • RO water

A remineraliser restores the hardness shrimp and plants need.

    Aquaforest Remineralizer RO Water Mineraliser
  • pH slowly

Change pH slowly, because a sudden shift stresses fish.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a conditioner if the water stood overnight?

Standing removes some chlorine but not chloramine or heavy metals. A conditioner makes the water safe at once.

Why is my water cloudy?

In a new tank it is often a bacterial bloom, later overfeeding or a weak filter. A clarifier helps, but deal with the cause too.

Tap water is safe to drink but not always for fish and filter bacteria: it contains chlorine, and heavy metals can get into it from the pipes. A conditioner binds them straight away, so new water can go into the aquarium right after dosing.

The dose is based on the water you add, not the whole tank volume – one of the most common mistakes. When using reverse osmosis water, add enough remineraliser to reach the hardness your species needs and check the result with a test. A water clarifier helps against suspended particles, but water that stays cloudy usually points to overfeeding or a filter that is too young.

The range also includes a pH reducer, a water stabiliser, a bacterial water treatment and vitamins and trace elements for fish. Store the products in the dark and use them before the date on the pack.
