How to choose a breeding box

A breeding box gives newborn fish a safe place until they are big enough.

In a breeding trap the mother stays apart and the fry can hide.

Frequently asked questions

Can the mother stay in the breeding trap for long?

No, a cramped box causes stress: move the mother back right after giving birth.

Can a breeding box be used for quarantine?

Briefly, yes, for example to watch a new or sick fish. For longer treatment, a separate quarantine tank is better.

Livebearers such as guppies, mollies and platies give birth to fully formed fry, which other fish – and often the mother herself – see as food. Without cover, only a few young survive in a community tank. A breeding box hangs in the aquarium and keeps the fry separate but in the same water.

The range includes birthing boxes, mesh breeding boxes and larger rearing boxes for young fish. A birthing box suits the time of delivery, a mesh box longer rearing, as the water in it is constantly exchanged. It can also briefly isolate a sick or aggressive fish.

Place the box where there is moderate flow, but not right in front of the filter outlet. Feed the fry small portions several times a day and remove uneaten food, as it quickly fouls water in a small space. Return the female to the tank after birth.
