Frequently asked questions

How do I hatch brine shrimp?

Put the eggs in aerated salt water and hatch them as the maker instructs. Strain out the nauplii before feeding.

When should fry move to regular food?

As the fry grow, switch gradually to larger flakes or granules. Mixing foods during the change helps.

The first weeks of a fish's life are the most sensitive: fry grow quickly, but their mouths and stomachs are tiny. Without suitable food they fall behind in growth or die. That is why it pays to have fry food ready before the fry hatch or are born.

The range includes liquid food and fine powder for the very first days, flakes for young fish, freeze-dried brine shrimp nauplii, brine shrimp cysts for hatching yourself and a protein-rich growth food. Live hatched brine shrimp move in the water and trigger the hunting instinct, while dry food is more convenient and always to hand. Many breeders use both.

Livebearer fry are larger at birth and can often manage fine powder straight away, while the larvae of egg-laying fish need the smallest food at first. Keep fry in a separate breeding box or grow-out tank so adult fish do not eat them.
