How to choose aquarium cleaning tools

Choose the tool by glass type and thickness and the dirt you need to remove.

  • Glass thickness

A magnet cleaner's strength must match the glass thickness given with the product.

JBL Aqua-T Angle Glass Scraper with Blade 30 cm
  • Acrylic

In an acrylic tank use only a sponge made for it, as a blade scratches.

Kruger Meier Glesso Pro Aquarium Glass Cleaning Sponge
  • Hoses

A hose brush clears the slime that cuts filter flow.

Frequently asked questions

Can a magnet cleaner scratch the glass?

Yes, if a grain of sand gets between the magnet and the glass. Keep it away from the bottom and rinse it regularly.

How do I remove limescale from the glass?

Use a limescale remover made for it, following the maker's instructions. A scraper or sponge helps lift the loosened layer.

Regular cleaning is easier when every job has its own tool. Algae film on the glass blocks the view, slime in the filter hoses reduces flow and debris settled on the bottom loads the water. With the right tools these jobs are done quickly without turning the tank upside down.

A magnet cleaner suits everyday glass cleaning, and a floating model rises to the surface if it comes apart instead of sinking. A scraper removes tougher algae spots, and its blade can be replaced when it goes blunt. On the outside a glass cleaner helps, and a descaler deals with limescale.

The most common mistake is scratching the glass with a grain of sand caught under the magnet or blade. Clean away from the bottom, rinse the tool often, and on acrylic use a soft sponge instead of a bladed tool.
