How to choose artificial plants

An artificial plant needs no light or fertiliser and looks the same for years.

  • Height

Put low plants in front and tall ones at the back so the fish stay in view.

Frequently asked questions

Can artificial and live plants be combined?

Yes, artificial plants do not compete with live plants for nutrients. They also suit spots where light is scarce.

How do I clean artificial plants?

Take the plant out during a water change and brush the algae off in tank water. Do not use soap or cleaning agents.

Artificial plants give a tank a green look with no care at all: they need no light, fertiliser or CO2, do not rot and are not eaten by plant-eating fish. They suit beginners, tanks with large cichlids or goldfish that eat live plants, and quarantine or fry tanks.

The range includes low grasses, bushes, palms and bonsai-shaped trees, plus ready arrangements of several plants. Besides green there are red, pink, purple and fluorescent shades. Bury the plant's base in the substrate or cover it with stones so it stays put in the current.

A common mistake is lining all the plants up in one row or mixing too many colours. Build the tank the way nature does: low plants in front, tall ones at the back and sides, open swimming space in the middle. Algae grow on artificial plants too, so clean them during water changes.
