How to choose aquarium ornaments and caves

A good cave gives fish shelter and a place to spawn and does them no harm.

  • Hiding place

The fish must fit inside the cave and be able to turn round.

    Aqua Nova Ceramic Cave 16 × 18 × 12 cm
  • Material

Ceramic is heavy and does not change water chemistry, so it suits any tank.

Aqua Nova Ceramic Black Cylinder Fish House 11.5 × 4.5 cm
  • Spawning

Spawning cones and pipes suit cave-spawning fish and shrimp.

    Aqua Nova Ceramic Shrimp Pipes 7 × 5 × 4.5 cm

Frequently asked questions

How many caves does a tank need?

For territorial fish, add at least one hide per fish and one spare. That means fewer fights over the best spots.

Should an ornament be cleaned before use?

Rinse a new ornament in warm water without soap or cleaning agents. Check that openings and edges are smooth.

Ornaments and caves are not just for looks: many fish need a hiding place to feel safe. Without cover, shy and nocturnal fish are stressed and territorial fish fight more. Several cichlids, catfish and shrimp also breed in a cave or pipe.

The range includes ceramic caves, pipes, fish houses, tunnels, spawning cones and tree roots, plus shipwrecks, ruins, a skull and other themed pieces. Small pipes suit shrimp and fry, while large wrecks and trees become the centrepiece of the tank. An air-driven ornament connects to an air pump and moves with the bubbles.

Choose the size by the tank and the fish: an ornament that is too big takes swimming space, and an opening that is too narrow can trap a fish. Stand heavy pieces on the bottom glass, not on the substrate, so digging fish cannot tip them over. Check that all edges are smooth.
