How to choose natural fish food

Natural food adds protein and variety that dry food alone does not give.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I give natural food?

Give it alongside the staple food a couple of times a week. Feed only what the fish eat within a couple of minutes.

How is paste food different from dry food?

Paste is soft and strong-smelling, so even fussy fish take it well. Store an opened pack as the maker advises.

In the wild, fish eat insect larvae, small crustaceans and algae. In the aquarium flakes and granules are the staple, but more natural food is worth adding: it is rich in protein, makes fish hunt and helps fussy or newly bought fish start eating. Fish getting ready to spawn gain extra strength from it.

The range includes freeze-dried red and white mosquito larvae, artemia and artemia nauplii, soft paste food made from artemia and mosquito larvae, and seaweed sheets with garlic for plant-eating fish. Dried food is easier to store than frozen or live food.

Natural food is a supplement, not the only food. Give it a couple of times a week in small portions and remove any leftovers, as protein-rich food spoils the water quickly. Soak dried larvae briefly in tank water before feeding so they sink.
