Advice and care

How to choose filter adsorbers

An adsorber solves a specific problem, so choose it by what the test or the water shows.

  • Activated carbon

Use carbon after a treatment to remove medicine residues, colour and odour.

    Juwel Carbax - Active Charcoal
  • Nitrate and phosphate

Removers help when water changes are not enough and algae take over.

    Juwel Phorax - Phosphate Remover
  • Saturation

An adsorber saturates, so replace it when the maker advises.

    Juwel Nitrax - Nitrate Remover

Frequently asked questions

Should activated carbon stay in the filter all the time?

No, it is mostly used for a while, such as after treatment. If used constantly, it must be replaced regularly.

Can I use a phosphate remover in a planted tank?

Only briefly, because plants need nitrate and phosphate as nutrients. For a lasting problem, look for the cause in the balance of light and fertiliser.

Absorbers are filter media that bind specific substances from the water: ammonium, nitrate, phosphate, silicate or organic compounds. They do not replace water changes or biological filtration but help when the level of a particular substance is too high.

Place the absorber after the mechanical stage in the filter so that larger particles are already removed by the time water reaches it – that way it does not clog with dirt and lasts longer. Use a filter bag for loose granules so they do not get into the impeller. Ceramic granules do not bind substances but give filter bacteria a surface to live on, so they do not need regular replacing; rinsing in aquarium water is enough.

Before using a phosphate or nitrate remover, measure the levels with a test and keep measuring afterwards, because too sharp a drop can slow plant growth.
