Advice and care

How to choose an aquarium filter

Three things matter: the tank's volume, its livestock and where the filter will sit.

  • Volume in litres

Check the maker's rated volume and lean towards a filter with a little headroom.

  • By livestock

Shrimp and fry do best with a sponge filter that cannot suck them in.

  • Internal or external

An external filter keeps the tank clear and holds more filter media.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I clean the filter?

Usually every 4–6 weeks, or when the flow drops noticeably. Rinse the media in tank water and never replace it all at once.

Do I need a UV steriliser?

Usually not, but it helps against green water from floating algae and lowers bacteria in the water. It does not replace a biological filter.

A filter does two jobs in a tank. The mechanical part, sponge and floss, traps floating dirt, while the biological part houses bacteria that turn ammonia and nitrite, both toxic to fish, into less harmful nitrate. That bacterial colony is what keeps the water healthy rather than merely clear.

An internal filter is easy to fit and suits a small tank; a sponge filter suits shrimp and fry. An external filter sits in the cabinet, holds more media and leaves the inside of the tank free for plants. A UV steriliser helps against green water, but it does not do the bacteria's work.

The most common mistake is cleaning the filter too thoroughly. Rinse sponges in tank water, not tap water, and never replace all the media at once, or the colony is lost and the water can turn within days.
