Advice and care

How to choose and plant 1-2-Grow! plants

A lab-grown plant comes in gel and splits into several small pieces when planted.

  • Clean plant

A sterile plant is free of snails and algae, so it suits shrimp and new tanks.

    Utricularia graminifolia
  • Rinse off gel

Rinse the gel off well before planting so it does not foul the water.

    Solenostoma tetragonum 'Pearl Moss'
  • Small pieces

Carpets and mosses root faster in small pieces and cover more ground.

    Rotala wallichii

Frequently asked questions

How many cups do I need for a carpet?

It depends on the foreground area and your patience: fewer cups mean a longer grow-in. Denser planting gives an even carpet sooner.

Why are 1-2-Grow! plants small at first?

They are grown in the lab as small plants and adapt well to the aquarium. Within a few weeks they start growing in their new home.

Lab-grown plants are for anyone who wants to bring only the plant into the aquarium, without snails, algae or pests. The plant grows in a sterile environment and arrives in a sealed cup, which makes it a good choice for shrimp tanks and newly set-up aquariums.

The range includes foreground carpeting plants, mosses, Cryptocoryne, Bucephalandra, Anubias, stem plants and floating plants. Each plant's page lists its height and its light and CO2 needs, so you can check before buying whether it suits your lighting and CO2. Many carpeting plants need strong light and added CO2, while mosses and Anubias cope in a more modest tank.

Plant them as soon as possible after delivery; until then keep the cup somewhere bright but out of direct sun. Lab plants grow slowly in the first weeks while they adapt to the aquarium water, after which growth speeds up.
