How to choose terrarium furnishings

Furnishing gives the animal shelter, climbing space and somewhere to dig, all to suit the species.

  • Substrate by species

Sand or clay for desert species, coconut fibre, peat or moss for tropical ones.

  • Two hides

One hide at the warm end and one at the cool end, so the animal never has to choose.

  • Fix it firmly

Frequently asked questions

Are artificial plants fine in a terrarium?

Yes, they need no light or care and stay green even in a dry terrarium. Wash them now and then in warm water.

How big should a hide be?

Big enough for the animal to fit in completely while still feeling enclosed. A cave that is too large does not feel safe.

Terrarium decor is not just for looks: it directly affects an animal's behaviour and health. A tree-dwelling gecko needs height and branches, while a ground-dwelling lizard or snake needs room to move and places to hide. With too few hides, the animal is constantly stressed, eats less and may fall ill.

Plan the layout around temperature. Place a flat stone or branch under the warm lamp where the animal can bask, and a resting spot at the cooler end. Fix climbing branches and vines so they do not shift under the animal's weight. A background and artificial plants add structure and give a shy animal the feeling that it is not out in the open.

Choose materials that are easy to clean. Wash new stones and branches before putting them in and check that they have no sharp edges.
