Plants have a practical role in a terrarium: foliage breaks the line of sight so the animal can hide, and branches and stems give it routes to climb. Live plants, however, need light, watering and often a different climate from the animal, which is why many keepers prefer artificial plants.
Arrange the plants so the terrarium has both sheltered and open areas. Denser foliage suits the cooler end where the animal rests; keep the basking spot clear so the lamp shines directly on the animal. For tree-dwelling species, fix hanging plants so they can bear the animal's weight.
Choose plants with sturdy leaves that do not tear easily, especially if the animal tends to chew them. Check now and then that fixings have not come loose and that no sharp ends stick out. After washing, let the plants dry before putting them back.
