Reef aquarium water changes every day: corals, algae and bacteria consume elements, while the protein skimmer and filter media remove some of them. Regular water changes restore much of the balance, but in a fast-growing reef they may not be enough. These products help fill specific gaps and keep the biology balanced.
They fall into several groups: single elements such as iodine, potassium, iron, fluoride and strontium; amino acids and vitamins for corals; nitrifying and probiotic bacteria with their nutrient solution; fish food additives; and treatments for pests and diseases. Nitrifying bacteria are especially useful when starting a new aquarium.
Do not add everything at once or double a dose when results are slow. Introduce one new product at a time to see how the corals respond, and keep a log of doses and test results. Overdosing can trigger an algae outbreak or harm corals.
