Frequently asked questions

Does dry rock need treating before use?

Rinse off the dust and add nitrifying bacteria to the new tank. Dry rock needs time to be colonised.

What is nano rock for?

It comes in smaller pieces that suit the scale of a marine nano tank.

Base rock carries the whole reef: corals are later fixed on and between it, and the bacteria in its pores help keep the water clean. Because rock is hard to rearrange later, plan the structure before water and livestock go in.

How much rock you need depends on tank size and style. An open reef leaves fish more swimming room, a denser one gives corals more places to attach. Base rock forms a stable foundation, arches create caves and overhangs, and shelves give flat surfaces. A mixed box is handy for several shapes in one pack, and nano rock suits the scale of a small tank.

Build the reef dry on a table first and fix the rocks together with rock glue or epoxy putty. Everything must hold even when a fish or shrimp digs underneath. Before adding corals, rinse off the dust and seed the rock with bacteria.
