Frequently asked questions

Which tools does a planted tank need?

The basics are long tweezers, curved scissors and a gravel cleaner. Add a magnet cleaner or scraper to keep the glass clean.

How do I choose a magnet cleaner?

Choose it by the glass thickness given with each product. Make sure no grain of sand gets between the magnet and the glass.

Maintenance tools fall roughly into three groups: water changes and substrate cleaning, glass cleaning, and planting and trimming. Fish nets, breeding boxes, plant glues, thermometers and automatic feeders belong here too.

When choosing a tool, consider the depth of your aquarium. Tweezers and scissors should be long enough that your hand does not have to go deep into the water, as that disturbs fish and stirs up the substrate. A scraper blade must suit the glass: for an acrylic tank use only a scraper made for acrylic, so the surface does not get scratched.

A typical mistake is scraping the bottom edge of the glass where a grain of sand has lodged, which leaves a scratch. Rinse tools in clean water after use and let them dry so blades and joints stay in good condition. Test an automatic feeder a few days before a holiday.
