Frequently asked questions

Why won't a new fish eat dry food?

A new fish sometimes takes a few days to accept dry food. Soak granules in tank water before feeding so they are softer.

Does overfeeding harm the reef?

Yes, uneaten food raises nitrate and phosphate and feeds algae. Feed in small portions.

In a reef tank feeding is a matter of balance: fish need varied food, but every uneaten piece breaks down and raises nitrate and phosphate, which corals tolerate poorly. The range includes flakes, granules in two sizes and plant-based food, so you can vary the menu.

Flakes suit fish that feed at the surface and in mid-water. Granules are more compact and do not break down as quickly in water, so they are easier to dose accurately. Plant-based food is important for tangs and other algae grazers, which need it every day even when algae grow in the tank.

Switch off wave pumps for a few minutes while feeding so the food is not swept straight into the filter or between the rocks. Get a new fish used to dry food gradually by offering it together with food it already knows.
