Flakes are thin sheets of dry food that float on the surface at first and then sink slowly. That makes them best for fish that feed at the surface and in mid-water. Bottom dwellers often get only the leftovers, so it makes sense to give them sinking food.
A good everyday food contains both animal and plant ingredients. Colour foods are meant to bring out the fish's natural tones, while spirulina and vegetable flakes are for herbivorous fish. If the tank holds several species, rotate two or three foods to keep the diet varied.
The most common mistake is overfeeding. Give only as much as the fish eat in a couple of minutes and remove what is left, because food that sinks to the bottom spoils the water. Choose a pack size you will use up within a few months.
