Advice and care

How to choose an aquarium light

The right light fits the tank's length and gives plants as much light as they need.

  • Length

Choose a light whose length or bracket range matches the tank's length.

  • Power for plants

Anubias and mosses do fine with a standard LED; carpets and red plants need more.

  • Photoperiod

Keep the light on about 8 hours a day, as too long a day encourages algae.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a timer for the light?

A timer or controller switches the light on and off at the same time every day, which helps prevent algae. Some models also give a gentle sunrise and sunset.

Is a stronger light always better?

No: without CO2 and fertiliser, a strong light tends to cause algae. Light, CO2 and nutrients need to be in balance.

An aquarium light does two jobs: it gives plants the energy for photosynthesis and brings out the colours of fish and plants. LED lights are economical, add little heat to the water and spread light evenly along the tank. The range also includes light bars, moonlights, mounts, hanging kits, dimmers and controllers.

When choosing a light, look at its length or mounting range, its output and how it is controlled. The deeper the tank, the less light reaches the bottom, so a tall aquarium needs a stronger light than a shallow one for the same plants. A hanging light leaves the top open and gives room to plants that grow above the surface.

In a new aquarium, start with a shorter photoperiod and lengthen it gradually once the plants have rooted. If algae start to spread, first reduce the light intensity or duration before changing anything else.
