How to choose an aquarium

Before buying, decide where the tank will stand and what you want to keep in it.

  • Bigger is steadier

Water values change more slowly in a larger tank than in a very small one.

  • Set or separate

In a set the filter, light and heater are already matched.

  • Solid base

A full tank is very heavy, so put it on a level cabinet made for that model.

Frequently asked questions

Is the cabinet included in the set?

Not always: the product page shows whether the cabinet is included or sold separately. Matching cabinets are under Furniture.

How many fish can a tank hold?

It depends on the fishes' adult size, behaviour and the filter, not just the litres. Stock the tank gradually and check the water with tests.

Choosing a new aquarium starts with its location and purpose. A quiet spot away from windows and radiators keeps the water temperature stable and limits algae growth. Decide too whether you want a planted, community or shrimp tank, as that sets the dimensions, light and filter.

The range includes complete kits, nano kits for small fish and shrimp, standalone tanks and cabinets. The advantage of a kit is that the filter, light and heater are already chosen and matched. A lid also reduces evaporation and keeps jumping fish in. A nano tank fits on a desk, but its small water volume calls for more careful maintenance.

Cycle a new aquarium before adding fish: fill it, let the filter run for a few weeks and check the water with tests. Add fish in small groups so the filter bacteria can keep up with the growing load.
