Advice and care

How to choose terrarium gear and accessories

Equipment should mimic the species' climate: light, heat and humidity go together.

  • UVB by species

Diurnal reptiles need UVB; pick its strength by whether the species lives in desert or tropics.

  • Measure both ends

A thermo-hygrometer at the warm and cool end shows whether the climate is right.

  • Safe feeding

Long tweezers keep your hand away from the animal and lower the risk of a bite.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I replace a UVB lamp?

As often as the maker recommends, because UV output fades before the lamp goes out. Write down the date you fitted it.

What makes a water bowl safe?

A low, heavy bowl the animal can easily climb out of and cannot tip over. Change the water every day.

A terrarium animal cannot move somewhere more suitable, so the equipment has to create the daylight, warmth and humidity it needs. This section covers lamps, measuring instruments, bowls, feeders and care accessories that together keep the climate steady.

Diurnal reptiles need a basking spot and UVB light, while nocturnal species and many amphibians need more shade and humidity. Place the heat source at one end so there is a warmer and a cooler zone to choose between. A UVB lamp's output fades before the lamp goes out, so replace it at the interval the manufacturer recommends, even if it still lights up.

A common mistake is judging the climate by touch or by a single thermometer. Check both ends separately and watch humidity, especially after misting. Use long tweezers for feeding and keep bowls clean.
