How to choose terrarium accessories

Bowls, feeders and islands have to suit the animal's size and way of life.

  • Low water bowl

A bowl should be low and heavy, so the animal can climb out and it cannot tip.

  • Right height

Fix bowls higher for tree-dwelling geckos and on the floor for ground dwellers.

  • Turtle island

An aquatic turtle needs an island or ramp to climb onto and bask under the lamp.

Frequently asked questions

What is an insect feeder for?

It keeps live food in one place, so insects cannot hide in the substrate. It also makes it easier to see how much the animal ate.

How often should bowls be cleaned?

Change the water every day and wash bowls regularly in warm water. Clean the food bowl after every feed.

Small accessories affect an animal's daily life more than they seem to. The right bowl provides clean drinking water, a feeder keeps live food under control, and an island gives a water turtle a place to dry off and warm up. A lock keeps sliding doors shut so the animal cannot get out.

Material and shape matter. A ceramic or stone-effect bowl is heavy and stays put, while a bark or root-effect bowl blends into the layout. For geckos there are hanging bowls and magnetic feeders that sit at branch height. A calcium shaker helps coat insects evenly with powder before feeding.

A common mistake is a water bowl that is too deep, in which a small or young animal can drown. Choose the bowl by the animal's size, change the water daily and wash the food bowl after each feed.
