Advice and care
How to choose filter spare parts
The filter's maker and model decide what fits, and they are usually in the product name.
Model first
Check the filter model on its label or in the manual before choosing a part.

Impeller and shaft
If the filter gets noisy or the flow drops, clean the impeller and its shaft first.

Sponges in stages
Replace sponges a few at a time so useful bacteria stay in the filter.

Frequently asked questions
How do I find the right spare part?
Search by the filter's maker and model, shown on its label or in the manual. The same model is usually in the part's name.
When should the impeller be replaced?
When it is worn, cracked or still noisy after cleaning. A worn impeller reduces flow and strains the motor.

The parts of an external or internal filter wear at different rates. Sponges and cartridges clog and lose their shape, seals harden and start to leak, and the impeller wears and becomes noisy. Replacing a small part in time saves you from having to replace the whole unit.
Before ordering, note the exact filter model and work out which part is causing the problem. Leaks often come from the lid or hose connector seal, weak flow from a clogged sponge or a worn impeller. Seals are worth replacing whenever the filter is open anyway.
Rinse filter sponges in water taken from the aquarium and do not replace them all at once, because they hold the bacteria that clean the water. A UV lamp's output fades before the lamp goes out, so replace it after the interval the maker recommends.
