Frequently asked questions

Can I start right away with a set?

Besides the set you need substrate, a water conditioner and time to cycle the filter. Let the filter run for a couple of weeks before adding fish.

Can a set be upgraded later?

Yes, the filter, light or heater can later be swapped for a stronger one. Check that the new device fits the tank's size and lid.

In a set the aquarium and equipment are matched to each other: the lid, light and filter are sized for that particular tank, so you do not have to work out which filter or lamp fits. For a beginner it is a reliable way to start.

When choosing the size, remember that a larger volume of water stays more stable and is more forgiving; a very small tank needs more attention. A full aquarium is heavy, so the base must be level and strong enough. Some sets come without a cabinet – you will find a matching one in the Furniture category. Also check whether the set includes a heater, as tropical fish need one.

After setting up, add substrate, plants and water and let the filter run for a couple of weeks before adding the first fish. Meanwhile, bacteria that break down fish waste grow in the filter.
